New Smyrna Beach, FL - If you can wait two weeks to get a building permit from the city of New Smyrna Beach, you should. A Temporary Permit Fee Reduction program, which eliminates building permit fees at up to $5,000 per property in the city of New Smyrna Beach, gets underway on March 29, 2021. The program complies with a recently passed Florida statute that caps the dollar amount of permit fees local governments can collect and carry forward. The City Commission approved the program for an initial 6-month period last month. At the end of that time, it will be evaluated for possible continuation. The $5,000 permit credit applies only to residential and non-residential building permit fees. It does not include impact fees and other non-building fees such as engineering, planning, fire, special events, and business taxes. In order to participate in this program, the parcel must be located in the City of New Smyrna Beach. Those properties located in the Volusia County ISBA would need to annex in to the City in order to be eligible. The credit will not be available if Code Enforcement determines that work has been done without a permit. Permits issued prior to March 29 may not be canceled and re-applied for in order to obtain the credit. Re-inspection fees are also not eligible for the credit. For questions and further information on the Temporary Permit Fee Reduction program, please contact New Business Coordinator Carmen Moschner at cmoschner@cityofnsb.com or 386-410-2849.
