Long term visa

Once you receive confirmation of your appointment, please show up on the day and time indicated bringing a copy of the confirmation email. No-shows will imply cancellation of the appointment.

The Embassy of Italy in Addis Ababa will always provide a response to a request for an appointment. Please do NOT write to the Embassy to solicit an appointment request.

The applicant should provide the following documents (in original and copy):

1. Type D ”national” visa application form, duly filled in capital letters and in every field, dated and signed. The application form can be downloaded from the dedicated page;
2. Valid passport with remaining validity of at least three months and two blank pages. The passport must be in good condition and show no signs of alteration and/or tampering;
3. One recent color passport-size photograph (3.5 cm x 4.0 cm), with light background;
4. Round-trip air booking;
5. Economic means of subsistence for the planned stay. These means are quantified in the amount of 467.65 euros per month for each month of the academic year, equivalent to 6,079.45 euros annually. The availability in Italy of such means of subsistence must be proven by means of personal or parental economic guarantees or by Italian or foreign entities or citizens legally residing in the territory of the State, or provided by Italian Institutions and Bodies of established credit, including Universities, by local Governments, by foreign Institutions and Bodies considered reliable by the Italian Diplomatic Representation.
6. Suitable housing in the national territory:
   • The letter certifying residence in university dormitory
   • declaration of hospitality (click here to download). The invitee must be a citizen legally residing in Italy
   • regular lease agreement for a residential accommodation duly signed
   • hotel reservation to cover the first period of stay in Italy;
7. Adequate insurance coverage for medical treatment and hospitalization, which the student must prove possession of, when applying for an entry visa. The initial validity must coincide with the departure date of the flight reservation.

The following formulas are allowed:

• • foreign insurance policy, the forms of assistance provided for which are valid in Italy and which shall not involve limitations or exceptions to the rates established for urgent hospitalization throughout its duration;
  • insurance policy with national agencies or companies accompanied by a statement from the insurer specifying that there are no limitations or exceptions to the rates charged for urgent hospitalization throughout its duration.

  Preliminary documentation to be submitted to Diplomatic-Consular Representations when applying for entry visas for Bachelor’s Degree/Academic Diploma courses and single-cycle courses:

  1. Final qualification in original secondary education with at least 12 years of schooling, or
  2. substitute certificate for all legal purposes; the final qualification may alternatively be accompanied by attestation issued by the Italian ENIC-NARIC center (CIMEA), attestations from foreign official bodies or any Declaration of Value;
  3. certificate of successful completion of academic aptitude tests, if any, required for university entrance in respective countries of origin;
  4. Italian translations of the documents indicated in (a) and (b) above;
  5. Other documentation related to the verification of the veracity of the foreign degree;
  6. A summary of the pre-enrollment application made on UNIVERSITALY as validated by the institution of higher education

  Preliminary documentation to be submitted to Diplomatic-Consular Representations when applying for entry visas for Master’s Degree/Academic Diploma courses and, more generally, for second- and third-cycle courses:

  1. foreign official qualification corresponding to the first or second cycle of the Bologna Process qualifications framework and level 6 or 7 according to the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), depending on entry to second or third cycle courses, obtained at a higher education institution that allows on-site continuation of studies at academic institutions at the next level (second cycle or third cycle of the Bologna Process/EQF level 7 or 8) and that has no “substantial difference” according to the principles of the Lisbon Convention and the national methodology adopted by the Italian ENIC-NARIC center (CIMEA);
  2. the final degree may alternatively be accompanied by attestation issued by the Italian ENIC-NARIC center (CIMEA), attestation from foreign official bodies, or any Declaration of Value;
  3. certificate issued by the competent institution of higher education stating the examinations passed, as well as for each discipline, the detailed programs for obtaining the aforementioned degrees.
  4. The student can check at the time of publication of the places that each institution of higher education reserves for individual courses, whether or not and for which foreign languages he or she is exempt from translating this certificate. Post-secondary studies (exams and credits) already completed can be attested by the Diploma Supplement, where adopted;
  5. Italian translations of the documents indicated in (a) and (b) above;
  6. Other documentation related to the verification of the veracity of the foreign degree;
  7. The pre-enrollment application summary as validated by the Institution of Higher Education.

  In the case of students applying for a D ”national” study visa at the Embassy of Italy in Addis Ababa – nationals of Ethiopian, Djiboutian, South Sudanese and any other nationality provided that they are legally resident in the three states of accreditation of the Embassy of Italy in Addis Ababa – will be required to present their qualification (Secondary Studies Diploma or Bachelors’ Degree, or Masters’ Degree) duly legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Djibouti or South Sudan accompanied by Italian language translation. Based on the submission of these documents, the Declaration of Value will be obtained.

  For authentication/legalization of diplomas awarded in Yemen, please contact the Italian Embassy in Amman, Jordan.

  Legalization of secondary school diploma is not required for students from any Italian State School abroad.

  The Embassy reserves the right to request additional documentation.

  FULFILLMENTS UPON ARRIVAL IN ITALY:

  Within eight working days of arriving in Italy on a Type D “national” visa for STUDY (university enrollment), applicants must apply for a residence permit for study.

  Dependent work visa (“Lavoro subordinato”, National “D” visa)

  The following documents (both in original and one copy) have to be provided by the applicant:

  1. 1. 1. National Visa Appilcation Form (D), duly filled (IN CAPITAL LETTERS) and signed. According to the Schengen Visa Code, “as a rule, the application ought to be lodged at least 15 days prior to intended date of travel”. The application form can be downloaded from the dedicated page;
        2. One recent colour passport-sized photograph (3.5 cm x 4.0 cm), with a bright background;
        3. Valid passport or travel document with a validity of at least three months after the end of the intended departure of Schengen area with at least 2 blank pages;
        4. Authorization to the DEPENDENT WORK (LAVORO SUBORDINATO) issued by the Italian Immigration Authority (“Nulla Osta” from the Sportello Unico Immigrazione-SUI);
        5. Flight booking (round trip);
        6. Accompanying travelers must have a health insurance policy valid for all Schengen states for the duration of the planned stay, plus 15 days deductible, covering a minimum of 30,000 euros;
